Well it’s almost a month since I set up my blog so it’s high time I got cracking with actually writing some blog posts. I know I have a tendency to procrastinate hugely – I’m sure I could win medals if procrastination were an Olympic sport! So I need to just start….it’s always starting something that’s the hardest part. So what better place to begin than with a post about my blog title. There are 3 reasons why ‘Sitting in the Kitchen Sink’ resonates with me.
- “I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.” So begins the opening chapter of ‘I Capture the Castle’ by Dodie Smith. This is one of my absolute favourite books. If i’m feeling low this book really cheers me up. It’s a great coming-of-age story and is the perfect mix of family drama, romance and comedy.
- The Cure! As a child who grew up in the 80s I discovered The Cure through songs like The Lovecats and Friday I’m in Love. However since meeting my husband (who is an even bigger Cure fan than me) I’ve really enjoyed exploring their extensive back catalogue. We’ve been lucky enough to see them live – once at Wembley Arena in 2016 and also at Robert Smith’s Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre in June this year (they were amazing both times). ’Boys Don’t Cry’ is a favourite album of mine and I really love the track ’10:15 Saturday Night’ which includes the line “And I’m sitting In the kitchen sink”. It always makes me smile!
- My Mum loves telling the story of a particular family holiday when I was a baby where we stayed in a caravan. Apparently I had to be bathed in the kitchen sink. I’m sure this happened to other kids too. Who can relate to this?!
